Someone in our "fellowship of the similarly afflicted," (as we've come to call those affected in some way by disability), fell during a siezure the other day, and injured his leg.

In the confusion of trying to treat the seizure, the leg problem wasn't detected until later, when a wheelchair had to be found, and a means of transport, etc, etc.

I recall a HUGE fight in a parking lot with my husband's wheelchair, as, after I tucked him into his seat, I tried to fold it up and heft it into the trunk--in 30 below weather. Wheelchairs are heavy, for those who have never had to manhandle them, and I was suddenly angry enough to swear, and likely did.

Disability is a wilderness, isn't it? God brought this verse to mind to share--it's one that has often encouraged us.

"His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man. The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love (Psalms 147: 10, 11)

Cling today to the amazing hope we have in our great God, who is both loving and strong--and OURS to lean on.

One of the things people attacked by pirates have in common is their need to connect with someone who understands, someone who's walking--or has walked--a similar road. If you're falling down, either as a victim or a caregiver, try this to find your way up again--reach out both hands. Extend one to someone else--to share, to care, to give whatever you can manage, even if it's only a smile. With the other hand, reach for God. You'll find yourself swaddled by acceptance and understanding, and this day...you will make it through.

He who dwells in the secret place of the most high will abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.  Ps. 91: 1,2  NIV

Among others, that verse is strong ammunition when life attacks. I like to remind the pirates--and my own soul--that no matter what circumstances I face, God provides a a hiding place; a refuge and a fortress for my weary war-torn spirit. That place is none other than relationship with himself.

In the beginning days after the pirates of West Nile neurological disease attacked, when life's familiar shores had receded far, and our little boat lay dead in the water, a few phrases from an old hymn came to mind. "All I have needed, God has provided...strength for today, bright hope for tomorrow..."

We latched onto those words, and they're still inspiring us to grab the strength and hope that comes from far above and outside ourselves. What about you? What words have lifted you in your darkest days?

Running out of hope?  Strength almost gone?

Pirate-fighting days are dark, arduous, and draining. Sometimes, though, God  uses a few words to help turn the day around. Words that are both strengthening and hope-giving.

We share words like that here.

Remember...though we fight different pirates, none of us are alone in our battles. God walks alongside.

If you'd like prayer, please email us. We pray daily for our fellow pirate-fighters, and we'll gladly add you to our list.

Please understand that we can't personally respond to every email--God can, though, in ways you may never understand.

    Strength and hope to you.
